I have been developing creative art workshops for youth and adults that focus on enhancing self-expression through art and poetry for over 10 years. These workshops have been done extensively in Toronto schools as well as in community centres and women’s centres.
Creative Art Workshops
Although I am inspired to create art, I am also inspired to give others an opportunity to express themselves through both art and poetry. Some of my greatest joy is found when working with youth in schools. During my Poetic Art workshops, Students who are labelled as “behavioural” often open up and blossom by creating inspiring art and poetry.
Their teachers and peers are often surprised as this student really applies themselves and produces an artistic piece that everyone is proud of.
These students often feel a sense of great artistic accomplishment in having given voice to their inner creative selves and expressing themselves in a meaningful way. They have accomplished something that they did not feel possible at the beginning of the workshop – they surpassed their expectations.
These students often look at me with hopeful eyes that soak up the information offered in each workshop. Little do they know that their raw creativity is such an inspiration and a gift that unfortunately gets lost as in adulthood.
In the same way that I am seen as a ‘teacher’ during those workshops, I am also very much a student who learns a refreshing lesson from the artistic voices of young artists. Working with youth is inspiring – it opens me up as a artist and is a reminder to never close the door on my own creativity and to keep exploring and pushing my artistic boundaries.
